A row of four 4-story Renaissance-revival (with Francois I elements) residential buildings completed together in 1893. Designed by Hermann Horenburger, they are clad in brownstone, with No. 36 a more rustic-red color. They are arranged in an A-B-A-B pattern, and are the four western houses in what was originally a row of eight; the easternmost house at No. 28 remains, while the other three have been replaced by a larger apartment building. Each has had its stoop replaced by a ground-level entrance on the right, down a couple steps from the sidewalk.
No. 36 at the east end of the row of four has a black wood-and-glass door; the other have red doors. There are two single-windows with iron grilles to the left, which - unlike the other three facades - are not fronted by a low stone wall and iron railing enclosing landscaping. A large window replaces the original parlor-floor entrance. This window and the two single-windows to the left also have iron grilles, and are flanked by fluted pilasters with Ionic capitals. A band of carved shells and foliate ornament tops this 2nd floor, surmounted by a dentil course. The 3rd floor has four bays of narrow single-windows, and the 4th floor has two in the center, flanked by small, oval windows at the ends, both with four compass-point keystones. A large gable at the top enclosed an attic floor, with a tripartite window that has a larger round-arched pane flanked by smaller square-headed ones, all topped by a drip lintel and niche.
No. 38 has a narrow double-window and transom replacing the original parlor-floor entrance. There are beveled surrounds with rounded upper corners around this bay and the paired windows to the left, below which is a band course with recessed panels. There is also a lion's head keystone above the ground-floor entrance. The 3rd floor has a small, projecting 3-window bay on the left, with angled sides, and a single-window on the right, all framed by slender, engaged colonnettes. A projecting band course cross the top of this floor, with a stone parapet with quatrefoil panels capping the projecting bay. The top floor has paired windows on the left and a single-window on the right, with drip moldings. The facade is capped by a sloped shingle roof.
No. 40 matches the design of No. 36, but with a lion's head keystone above the entrance, and a different band course above the 2nd floor, this one ornamented with garlands and ribbons below its dentils.
No. 42 at the west end matches the design of No. 38, but with a flat stone parapet at the roof instead of a sloped shingle roof.
