Estate home first built c. 1801 in the Italianate style by William Hammond Dorsey and was shortly therafter expanded by Edward Magruder Linthicum in the 1850's. It was later purchased by Mildred and Robert Woods Bliss who commissioned alterations by Frederick H. Brooke to create a Colonial Revival manor home. They also commissioned Beatrix Farrand to design a number of terraced gardens in the mid-1920's as well as design service court buildings.

Lawrence G. White of the firm of McKim, Mead & White designed a music room in 1928. That ceiling was decorated by Armand Rateau in the manner of one from a château from the Loire in France.
