Patience Lake is located 18 km east of Saskatoon and serves as a groundwater discharge region for higher elevations to the east and west of the lake. The lake is approximately 6 km long and 1 km wide. At the south end of the lake, the Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan owns and operates a solution mine that produces 331 000 tonne of potash annually. Approximately 50 ha of Patience Lake is sectioned-off with an earthen dyke and used to store brine tailings and saturated KCl solution. Approximately 3x107 m3 of solid salt tailings are stored on the land surface between the mine site and the brine pond.

Patience Lake originally had an underground mining operation, but extensive flooding in 1987 forced it to close. The operation was converted to a solution mine soon after.
