A low-lying, ancient channel that forms part of the South Saskatchewan River valley in the Saskatoon area. Once part of the river, over time the channel became disconnected and became a marshy, rock-filled basin. The area was too wet and rocky to be farmed, so it remains an untouched parcel of native prairie. The swale is a wildlife corridor and is home to many indigenous species of plants and animals, some of which are endangered.

The city's future expansion plans show the swale being left undeveloped, where it will provide some natural grassland green space. It was also left alone because the land is difficult to service, and also because it provides natural drainage for any future neighbourhoods on either side.
