4-story Renaissance-revival/Neo-Grec residential building completed in 1880. Designed by Henry J. Hardenbergh, it is clad in red brick above a ground floor of stone, white-and-grey striped painted brick, and glass-and-metal storefronts. The entrance to the upper floors is at the west side of the south facade on 73rd Street, atop a short stoop. It has glass-and-metal double-doors set in a round-arch topped by a keystone and entablature with a triangular pediment. To the right is a circular window with compass point keystones, and at the east end is a plate-glass storefront section; a stone cornice tops both the round window and storefront sections. The upper floors have three bays of single-windows in brownstone framing; the eastern two bays project slightly from the western one, and have small wrought-iron balconies at the 3rd floor. An elaborate brick and stone roof parapet tops the facade, decorated with small, square panels with flowers or medallions, corbeling, and dentils. Centered above the east two bays, a small gable with a carved panel topped by a pediment extends above the roof line.
Along the wide east elevation on the avenue, the storefronts continue along the ground floor, separated by striped white-and-grey brick piers. The upper floors have three single-windows in the center, with two bays of paired windows on either side. A red metal fire escape with full-width landings fronts each floor. The roof line decoration continues from the south facade.
Developed by Edward S. Clark, the apartment building was built as the end anchor of a row of 25 rowhouses along 73rd Street that shared similar architectural characteristics (most of the rowhouses have been replaced by larger apartment buildings, but the easternmost rowhouse remains). 101 West 73rd contains 18 apartment units. The ground floor is occupied by EuroOptika, and Really Great Things boutique.
