military, microwave tower / microwave transmission, tropospheric scatter station
Terminal troposcatter transmitter/receiver antenna which relayed communications between the Hagerstown Project Office to the relay site at Peters Mountain to the SE. One of two located onsite, the reflector and feed horn are made out of concrete and nuclear-hardened to withstand blast effects in the event of attack. The co-located and equally hardened microwave transmitters handled line-of-sight communications relays to nearby towers.
Following the shutdown of the troposcatter relay system, both towers at Hagerstown are no longer operational but still serve as mounts for microwave transmitters.
