133-foot, 12-story Beaux-Arts residential building completed in 1902 as a hotel. Designed by Frederick C. Browne, it was the first building of the Hotel Hargrave; the south building was designed by the same architect, but with a different styled facade, and completed five years later.
The north building's 4-bay main facade is clad in white brick and stone and green copper above a 3-story, beige-painted, rusticated limestone base. The two middle bays are grouped together, and project just slightly forward of the rustication on either side. All fours bays are round-arched at the ground floor, with the main entrance in the east bay, with glass double-doors and a sidelight. The other bays have a storefront and glass infill, with a black metal canopy over the middle bay. There are punched single-windows at the 2nd floor, the middle two paired together, and the outer two having scrolled keystones below their sills. Three flagpoles project from above the middle bays. The 3rd floor is transitional, with smooth painted stone at its lower half, and rustication on the upper part. There are single-windows in the end bays and double-windows in the middle bays, each framed in brick. The outer bays have simple keystones, and the middle two have more elaborate scrolled keystones supporting (along with five pairs of similar, scrolled console brackets) a projecting stone balcony at the 4th floor. The balcony has a wrought-iron railing and undulates out slightly at the two middle bays.
The middle bays at the upper floors have projecting tripartite windows flanked by green copper pilasters and with green copper spandrels in between each floor. The narrow end panes are angled (with rounded end spandrels) and there are low, iron railings at each bay. The end bays have single-windows with bracketed sills and splayed brick lintels with keystones. White stone quoins frame the end bays on both sides, and a regular column of quoins runs up the center pier between the middle bays.
The projecting bay windows in the middle are topped by very large cartouches at the 8th floor, and the 9th floor has recessed window openings with an oversized console bracket above a lion's head at each pier supporting a stone balcony with modillions on the underside and an iron railing on top. The top two floors consist of a green copper mansard that slopes back towards the top. It has four dormers with single-windows at the 11th floor, each framed by copper pilasters; the outer bays slope back at the 12th floor, while the middle two extend upward in extensions of the dormers, ending in rounded pediments.
The east elevation's upper floors are faced in beige stucco, with a shallow light well that has a few bays of single-windows. A metal catwalk at the rear of the roof connects to the roof of the south building, now rental apartments. This building was converted to condominiums in 1989, and contains 66 condominium units. The ground floor is occupied by Medical Offices of NY.
