Michigan Building Parking Garage (Detroit, Michigan)

Canada / Ontario / Windsor / Detroit, Michigan
interesting place, historic remains, parking garage

Former Michigan Theater designed by Rapp & Rapp of Chicago, one of the foremost theater designers of the period. It featured such artists as Marx Brothers, Jack Benny, Red Skelton, Louis Armstrong, and Betty Grable. It was going to be converted into a multi-level parking garage but doing so would've made the building unstable so the interior was mostly gutted in 1977 after closing a year earlier. Parts of the theater were kept, including the lobby, proscenium arch, and decorative plasterwork on the ceiling which are still visible today inside the garage. The ornate plaster ceiling of the theater auditorium and grand lobby are found at at the ninth floor level, as are parts of the mezzanine, the 2nd and 3rd balcony foyers and their respective staircases. Although the interior fixtures are no longer present, the general layout of the former theater can still be easily discerned.
