CM Hall Lamp Company was organized in 1909 by J. Frederick Hartz, (founder of JF Hartz Company producer of surgical instruments and supplies), to manufacture motor, motorcycle and bicycle lamps and accessories for electric and acetylene equipment. Three years later, in 1912, the company constructed a two story, 60'x90' factory at 1035 East Hancock Street.
