archaeological site, abbey, Medieval / Middle Ages
The site of Roscam Abbey (on the coast, southeast of Galway) is defined by a well-preserved ecclesiastical enclosure, which surrounds the ruined round tower, church, and old graveyard. According to tradition, the monastery was established by Saint Odran (a brother of Saint Ciaran of Clonmacnoise) in the 5th century. In 807, the monastery was raided by the Vikings, but later recovered. The visible remains of the ruined church date to the 15th century.
