Site of Durrow Abbey (old Irish, Daru), founded in the 6th century (553 or 556) by Saint Columcille. The abbey seems to have been destroyed in the 12th century, although Hugh de Lacy build a motte castle within its enclosure in 1186. The site of the abbey includes the existing church of St Columcille and Durrow Abbey House and associated buildings.
