The third of four successive nuclear tests evaluating different bomb designs, Operation Grapple Shot Z3 was detonated on 11 September 1958 at an altitude of 2,650m/8,690 ft over this site. Air dropped by Vickers Valiant XD827 in what was to be the second "blind radar" drop technique, the device and its three-stage "Halliard" design were instead released on a visual drop and detonated 260 yards from its intended target with an explosive yield of 800kt
