The second of four successive nuclear tests evaluating different bomb designs, Operation Grapple Shot Z2 was detonated on 2 September 1958 at an altitude of 2,850m/9,350ft over this site. Air dropped by Vickers Valiant XD822, in the first live drop utilizing the "blind radar" technique, the device and its experimental "flagpole" design detonated 95 yards from its intended target and yielded an explosive force of 1Mt.
