Detonated on 28 April 1958 at an altitude of 2350m/7,710ft, Operation Grapple Shot Y was the second successful, and most powerful, detonation of a British thermonuclear bomb. Air-dropped by a Vickers Valiant, the device yielded an explosive force of 3Mt and remains the most powerful weapon ever tested by the United Kingdom.
