Detonated on 8 November 1957 at an altitude of 2250m/7,380ft, Operation Grapple Shot X was the first successful detonation of a British thermonuclear bomb. The device was air-dropped onto this site by Vickers Valiant XD824 and yielded an explosive force of 1.8Mt.
