Pointe Coupee’s First Ward was once home to a community named East Krotz Springs. Located along the Atchafalaya River, the community has now been absorbed by the Atchafalaya National Wildlife Refuge while the community of Krotz Springs has survived across the river, west from the original town. East Krotz Springs was originally known as Latania and was the site of a lumber mill in the early 1900s. However, the changes in the flows of rivers would impact the town negatively.
