The original name is Fausse Riviere from the French settlers, then translated into False River when the area came under American possession. It is the remnant of the former course of the Mississippi which became stranded when the main channel shifted east in 1722. The present 3,300 acre oxbow lake was a favored destination of the local gentry, among whom the influential Julien Poydras who owned six sugar plantations in the area. He rose to political prominence as the president of the Louisiana State Senate. Upon his death much of his wealth was left to charity.
