The Hunting Islands are part of the Julia Butler Hansen Refuge for Columbian White-tailed Deer. They are located on the Washington side of the Columbia River, just downstream from Cathlamet, Washington. They are across from the downstream end of Puget Island and upstream end of Tenasillahe Island.
The Hunting Islands are a group of two islands (and one small one) separated by sloughs. They are two-and-one-half-miles long, with the Elochoman Slough separating them from the Washington shore. The mouth of the Elochoman River, Washington, merges with the Elochoman Slough behind the Hunting Islands.
