The Detroit White Lead Works was founded in 1865 to produce paint by mixing white lead (carbonate of lead), oils and colors. Incorporated in 1880, the company carried on business on Jones Street until their factory was destroyed by fire in 1896. That same year a new factory was built at 560 (1950) East Milwaukee Street. In 1910 the company was acquired by Sherwin Williams although it continued to do business under its original name. Sherwin Williams discontinued using the plant sometime before 1933 as a new company, Permalac was organized in that year utilizing the present day 1891 Trombly Street address. The predecessor of the current occupant which was known as Arco Die Cast Metals commenced possession of the property in 1938.
