The Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific and the Northern Pacific Railroad mainlines paralleled each other along the Yellowstone River here. The CMSP&P ceased operating their line during 1982. Burlington Northern operated the former NP line, and built this connection to operate the CMSP&P line to Appleton, MN. BNSF Railway currently operates both lines.
