In 1974 the Detroit Free Press purchased the 22 acre parcel of land from the Penn Central Railroad and constructed a printing plant in 1979. The plant was expanded in 1986 and was closed in 2005 when printing operations were consolidated in Sterling Heights by the Detroit Newspaper Partnership which runs operations for the Free Press and the Detroit News.
The Detroit Riverfront Conservancy acquired the property in 2007 and tore down the building. The Riverfront Conservatory was formed to oversee development of the River Walk West plan.
