The AT&T Building was built as the headquarters for the Michigan Bell Telephone Company in 1912. The plans allowed for expansion and an additional 12 floors were added to the original 7 in 1927.
Another expansion was added in 1951 to the west and the final expansion is the 17-story building facing Michigan Avenue completed in 1974. It is also designed to accept an additional 9 floors to accommodate future needs.
