Remains of a Confederate line that saw action during the Battle of New Market Heights in Sept. 1864. It was named Signal Hill for the signal tower that was located here. The 4th Regiment USCT, which was an African-American unit, made a brave charge here, many of whom were later awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.
After the Battle of Fort Harrison, which saw the Union army extend their line further inland from the river, the Union built a fort here on the old Confederate line, which was named Fort Brooks. The fortifications remain intact today.
The property is currently owned by the County of Henrico, although is not open to visitors. It is presumed the conservation efforts will occur at some point.
