Founded in Clinton in 1893 as the Mount St. Clare Academy, a boarding and day school for girls, Ashford operated this campus until 2016. Until 2003 it was Mount St. Clare College, until 2005 it was the Franciscan University of the Prairies.

After a period of financial difficulty, the university was purchased by for-profit Bridgepoint Education in March 2005, the institution's name was changed to Ashford University and it became the base of a for-profit online school. Ashford University closed the Iowa campus at the end of the 2016 school year due to an inability to maintain an adequate enrollment.

The campus originally was sold by Ashford University to Clinton Catalyst on Dec. 22, 2015, for $1.6 million, in January 2017 the Asian Education Foundation purchased the property on contract with a value of $28 million with the plan to open the Iowa International STEM Academy at Clinton.
