Named for Charles E. Sumner, the high school was establish in 1875 as the first high school for African-Americans west of the Mississippi River. It has been at this location since 1908. Notable alumni include tennis player Arthur Ashe, Chuck Berry, Tina Turner, and seven members of the 332nd Fighter Group of the U.S. Army Air Corps (The Tuskegee Airmen.)
