Jefferson City is the capital of the U.S. state of Missouri and the county seat of Cole County. The population was 43,079 at the 2010 census.

Originally settled by the Mississippian mound builders, who had disappeared by the period of European exploration, replaced by the Osage people. The site of a village called Lohman's Landing, in 1821 the Missouri state legislature decided to move the state capital there, renaming the city Jefferson City after Thomas Jefferson. In 1826 the capital officially moved. In 1839 it was incorporated as a city. It was occupied by the Union army during the Civil War.
