A city with a population of 63,644 at the 2000 census. The county seat of Saint Charles County. The city was founded by the French in 1765 as Les Petites Cotes, or "the little hills." The city was the first state capital of Missouri, from 1821 to 1826. This was the last stop at a European settlement made by the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
