The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) on Monday reinstalled the Moti Darwaza - one of the important gateways to the Golconda Fort - after it had collapsed more than eight months ago.The Golconda Fort has eight gateways into the walled city. It was in December last year that the 25-feet Moti Darwaza came crashing down on account of what ASI officials then described as "wear and tear".
The decaying teak worsened the problem further "We have installed the door again. The conservation work began a few weeks prior. With the utmost care, we have replaced the decayed and decaying teak wood. The rusted iron sheets too have been replaced with those of same quality. Iron cladding has also been done wherever required," said Golconda conservation assistant M Shiva Kumar. The wicket gate has also been restored to its former glory and technical inputs were taken. Restoration of the Moti Darwaza marks the beginning of a new phase of conservation work of the other gateways to the fort."The other seven (gateways) would also be attended to as preventive conservation initiatives. The challenge is to retard the process of deterioration by appropriate intervention," ASI superintending archaeologist N Taher said. Conservation is an "ongoing" process, he added. The collapse of the darwaza created an outrage among heritage activists who demanded prompt action from authorities. Even as efforts of conservation continue, experts believe that Golconda is a victim of multiple entities controlling it.While the Archaelogical Survey of India is the custodian of 49 burjs (towers), many of which are crumbling, and moats which run into 54 acres and over 49 acres of Bala Hisaar and Katora Houz combined,
