Union Pacific's narrow gauge Utah & Northern built across Monida Pass in May 1880, heading for Butte, which was reached on December 26, 1881. The elevation of this railroad crossing is 6817', and the grades are 2.3% northbound and 1.1% southbound.
America's railroads built 31 crossings over the Continental Divide, and this is one of 10 that are still in use.
