office building, Neoclassical (architecture), 1910_construction
150-foot, 11-story Neo-Classical office building completed in 1910. Designed by Townsend, Steinle & Haskell, it wraps aronud the building on the southwest corner, and is clad in red brick above a 3-story limestone base. The frontage on 31st Street is five bays wide, with paired windows in each bay except for the narrower eastern bay, which has single-windows. The east facade on Broadway is four bays wide, again with paired windows, except for the southern bay. The southeast corner is chamfered, with a single window per floor. The west facade on 6th Avenue has three bays of paired windows.
The limestone of the base is coursed, with modern black metal and glass storefronts on the west and east facades, and the eastern end of the south facade. The main entrance is at the north end of the east facade on Broadway, with brass-framed glass doors in a black polished granite surround. The west end of the south facade has a service entrance with a stone surround, topped by a cornice supported by a pair of elongated, scrolled brackets. To the right are two pairs of small, square openings that have been filled in. The entire ground floor is capped by a dentiled cornice.
The paired windows at the 2nd & 3rd floors are separated by paneled stone pilasters with scrolled capitals, and have transoms. Those at the 3rd floor have projecting, brackets stone sills, and the piers at the top of the 3rd floor are highlighted by cartouches (only the outer piers on the 6th Avenue side). On the south facade, the westernmost openings at each floor have been filled in, and two other openings near the west end of the 2nd floor have had windows replaced by metal louvers. The base is capped by a simple stone band course.
The upper floors have a similar fenestration pattern to the base, with splayed stone lintels with keystones over the windows, and stone sills beneath. The single-window bay on both main facades is framed by stone quoins, and the entire chamfered corner bay is clad in coursed stone. The single-windows at the 4th floor have stone surrounds. There are also stone quoins at the northern edge of the east facade, and along both edges of the west facade. A dentiled cornice caps the 9th floor, with the top two floors designed the same as those below. A projecting, bracketed, green metal roof cornice wraps around each facade.
The north elevation is clad in plain red brick, with two bays of small windows toward the center, and a handful of regular-sized windows at the west end. The ground floor is occupied by Full Line Collection fashion jewelry and accessories.
