Sutro Tunnel.

This underground tunnel was dug by Adolph Sutro as a drainage system for the mines of the Comstock Lode in Virginia City. Flooding of the tunnels was a problem for the mines, so Sutro sold shares in the tunnel to the mine owners and the public. By the time the tunnel was actually completed, the mines had new ways to provide drainage, so Sutro took his profits and moved on to San Francisco, where he later became mayor and built the famous Sutro Baths.

The tunnel is largely collapsed now.
