Built in late 1942 as a single grass/turf airstrip to support the construction of a Civil Aviation Administration navigational beacon station, the Middleton Island Airport was enlarged and upgraded un the early 1950's to support the construction and support of the Middleton Island Air Force Station and the FAA navigation beacon station on the island. Following the cessation of Air Force activity on the island in 1985, the airfield is now primarily utilized by USGS Personnel visiting the Kittiwake Bird Sanctuary on the island.
