This is where the famous Storyville red light district of old New Orleans was located. Storyville existed from the 1890s to the 1930s until it was evacuated and demolished by order of the city.
In the 1940s, under the passage of the Wagner Bill, the Iberville housing projects have been at this location.
In 2008, the City of New Orleans began demolishing housing projects and replacing them with mixed income developments, leaving the Iberville Projects as the last of its kind in the city.
