In 1912, Massachusetts based Amesbury Metal Body and Frederick K England, decided to organize a new company to make vehicle bodies in Detroit. England Manufacturing was established and started producing metal stampings and automobile accessories in the old King Motor plant at 1559 East Jefferson Avenue.In 1916 property was acquired next to Federal Motor Truck on Federal Avenue. By the next year a new factory had been erected and employed 125 men. In 1921, the company was acquired by Fisher Body and combined with its Ternstedt operations. At that time the plant became known as Ternstedt No. 3.

By 1928, Ternstedt consolidated their operations on Fort Street and the No. 3 plant was sold to JM Smith Co. a manufacturer of hinges, moldings and auto hardware. From 1940 to 1948, the factory was owned by the Republic Aircraft products Division of The Aviation Corp which produced precision parts for airplane motors and propellers. By 1948 it had been converted into a mattress factory to produce mattresses under the Sealy name. In 1951 the building was purchased by Brown Reliable Bedding which manufactured the mattresses. In 1974 the name of the company was changed to Sealy Mattress of Michigan.
