The field headquarters of the San Dimas Experimental Forest, located at Tanbark Flats, includes a laboratory, mess hall, residences and utility buildings that were constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the 1930s. The wooded site is adjacent to perennial Tanbark Creek. Facilities include residences, barracks, mess hall, lab/office, and various storage and utility buildings. The buildings, roads, and water diversion structures at Tanbark include some unique rockwork and architecture from the 1930s and 1940s.
Location of 2 Civilian Public Service camps during WWII, CPS #2 (Jun 1941-Dec 1942) and CPS #76 (Jan 1943-Dec 1946) both managed by the US Forest Service as base camps, labor provided by 757 conscientious objectors working with the AFSC (American Friends Service Committee).

Location of the historic San Dimas Lysimeter facility which was constructed to study water use and hydrology in native plants and soils. Limited overnight accommodations and laboratory facilities are available at Tanbark for visiting researchers and scientists.
