The Angeles National Forest was established in 1908 and was the first national forest in the state of California. It was a merger of three Forest Reserves, the earliest of which was the San Gabriel Forest Reserve founded in 1892. Today it functions as a protected watershed and recreation area for the Los Angeles region.
