San Dimas Experimental Forest (SDEF)

Designated by the Man and the Biosphere Program of the United Nations as a Biosphere Reserve and by the National Science Foundation and the Institute of Ecology as an Experimental Ecological Reserve. Research began in January 1933 by J. Donald Sinclair, scientist-in-charge. Forest formally established March 28, 1934. Mission to measured the water cycle and determine if any extra water could used for agriculture and towns below. Area = 6786 hectares = 26 mi2 = 16769 acres.
