Historic 1,500-acre plantation. The Palladian-style main plantation home, which is the focal point of the property, was completed in 1819 by original owner John Hartwell Cocke. Cocke was a General in the War of 1812 and helped Thomas Jefferson establish the University of Virginia. The oldest structure on the plantation is a hunting lodge dating to about 1725, while a smaller house than the main house dates to 1812. The master builder who had a significant part in the building of Thomas Jefferson's Monticello also helped in the design of Bremo's 1819 mansion, and there is evidence to suggest that Jefferson himself had a part in its design as well. The plantation is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), where it is designated a U.S. National Historic Landmark District.
