protected area, NRHP - National Register of Historic Places, historic district, U.S. National Historic Landmark
14,000-acre National Historic District listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The district is "...noted for its concentration of fine rural manor houses and related buildings in an intact agricultural landscape." There are over 30 historically significant properties located entirely within the boundaries of the district, six of which have their own individual listing on the National Register of Historic Places. The landscape of the historic district largely retains the appearance it would have had in the antebellum period and continues to be protected from harmful development and alteration. It has been noted that even Route 15, which runs north/south through the district at its western end, was constructed in such a way that its presence does not disrupt the overall feel of the landscape.
