Historic estate of the family of Thomas Marshall, a politician whose son, John, served as fourth Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court from 1801 to 1835. The main house actually consists of two houses, the first of which is a Colonial-style farmhouse dating to 1773, built by Thomas. A Neoclassical-style house was added in 1819 by John, connected to the older structure by a passageway. The estate, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, once encompassed more land than it currently does, and part of the estate was subdivided in 1840 to provide land to John Marshall's granddaughter, Margaret for her own home. That property, called Ashleigh, is located just north of here, at Interstate 66's interchange with Route 17.
