Fort Niagara was an early strategic post built by the French to control the Niagara River and cement their trading and military alliance with the Iroquois.

It changed hands several time during the French and Indian War, and remained a British stronghold during the American Revolution. After U.S. independence, it served as the northern bastion of U.S. military authority on the tense U.S./Canadian border, and again changed hands several times during the War of 1812.

Fort Niagara was modernized under the Third-System of Northern frontier fortifications beginning in 1840 and as of 1851 was intended to be armed with sixteen 18-pounder guns and five flank howitzers for a total of 21 guns. Seeing its last military service as a barracks and training station for American soldiers throughout World War One and Two, the last US Army units were withdrawn in 1963.
