St. Vincent de Paul Church

USA / New Jersey / West New York / West 23rd Street, 125
 1860s construction, Roman Catholic church

Roman Catholic Church built in Chelsea in 1869. Originally designed in a Renaissance-revival style by Henry Engelbert, it was given a new Classical-revival facade by Anthony J. DePace in 1939. The 2-story church is faced in limestone, with four large, fluted Corinthian pilasters supporting a heavy, classic pediment that is lined with modillions and dentils and topped by a across. The ground level has three light-blue doors with stone surrounds and cornices. The larger main center opening is topped by a broken rounded pediment with a statue of St. Vincent carrying a small child and comforting another that looks up at him.

In the middle of the facade is a large circular window; to either side is a tall, round-arched window with leaded tracery. The entablature just below the main pediment has carved letters reading "SAINT VINCENT DE PAUL". The interior of the church features inlaid marbles, mosaics, massive fluted Corinthian columns and brilliant frescoes.

The Parish of St. Vincent de Paul was a national parish of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York. Founded in 1841, it was dedicated to serve the needs of the French-speaking population of the city. The parish was closed in January 2013.
