P.S. 11 Sarah J. Garnet School (New York City, New York)

USA / New Jersey / Hoboken / New York City, New York / West 21st Street, 320

5-story school completed in 1923. Designed by C.B.J. Snyder for the New York City Board of Education, it spans the block from West 20th Street to the main entrance on West 21st. The building is generally H-shaped, with recessed central sections, and two wings on either side extending out to the sidewalk. It has a white stone base (painted rust red on 21st Street), with red brick cladding above. The ground floor is set off by a stone cornice, and another runs across the 5th floor, near the roof line.

The windows are composed of large groups of four, framed in stone with quoins. The central section has three bays, with one each on the front and inner faces of the wings. On 21st Street, there are three entrances with wide stairs - a larger one in the center flanked by two smaller ones. The main, central entrance is under a stone segmental-arch, with stone panels and framing rising up to the top of the 2nd floor, where a stone cornice supports a balcony with short brick walls at the ends and decorative stone panels in the middle.

The roof line is stepped up between each window bay, and has stone panels with carved ovals above each bay. The brick parapet is capped by a stone coping. Metal fencing surrounds the rooftop used for physical education classes. There is also a playground located outside on the second floor of the south side (dubbed the "little yard" for the younger children [Pre-K and Kindergarten]), and a playground on the ground (dubbed the "big yard") outside on the west. The exposed western elevation is smooth-stuccoed and painted rust-red, with a tall painting of a cartoonish child figure in white.

The school also has a basement swimming pool, one of the few local public schools with such a pool. The public school offers classes ranging from preschool to the fifth grade. Formerly known for William T. Harris, it was renamed in 2022 after Garnet.
