290-370 S. Mills Ave. and 480 Cucamonga Ave. in 2 cities: Claremont (Los Angeles County) and Montclair (San Bernadino County). 15 bungalows (27 buildings on 32 acres total) built in 16 years (1923-1939) by a POLISH immigrant (Konstany "Steve" Stys, 1894-1961) and associates during the depression, as their own houses, using mostly recycled material. Also called "Rock Houses" because exterior walls and fences are cemented field stones ("Claremont potatoes"). The first unit at 290 Mills cost about $35 in material, when cement was about 10c/bag. See "Entering Russian Village" sign at 256 S. Mills Ave. meridian island, 2 blocks north. Added to National Register of Historic Places (PH0665673) on Dec. 28, 1978, to protect from street widening. pdfhost.focus.nps.gov/docs/NRHP/Text/78000680.pdf
