Shown on some older government maps as Amargosa. It was built as a company town between 1923-1926 by the Pacific Coast Borax Company. The Spanish Colonial structures were designed by Los Angeles-based architect Alexander Hamilton McCulloch.

Year-round population is fewer than 20. No gas stations, no restaurants and no nightlife, with but one exception: the Amargosa Opera House, featuring prima donna Marta Becket. People come from all over the world to attend these performances.
