The Ancient Greek city of Pherai (in Latin, Pherae) was located just west of modern Velestino. Under its early 4th-century tyrants Iason (Jason) and Alexandros (Alexander), it was briefly a leading power in Thessaly and northern Greece. After 344 BC a Macedonian fortress, Pherai became part of the Thessalian League in 196 BC and was besieged by the Seleucid Antiokhos III in 192 BC.
