Xerxes' channel

Greece / Halkidiki / Nea Ryda /
place with historical importance, archaeological site, interesting place

King Xerxes II of Persia ordered a channel to be dug at this site during his unsuccessful attack on Greece in 483 BC Many historians, ancient and modern, have argued that construction of the channel was not completed and that boats were towed over land carried on wheeled carriages.
Modern research, using geophysical methods and a series of test drillings, have proved that Xerxes completed the channel but it was never used after the war. Its sides collapsed in a very short time, leaving a shallow depression.
