Museum opened by the Soviets in the building where the German army surrendered on May 8, 1945, ending WWII in Europe.

The site had been a German base. It became the headquarters of the Soviet Army in East Germany during the Cold War and the Soviets operated a museum here from 1967 to 1994. After the withdrawal of all Soviet troops, the Germans and Russians agreed to reopen the museum in 1995.
