Constructed in 1957 as a secondary "Gap Filler" radar site supporting the surveillance and guidance missions of Hopedale Air Station, the Cape Makkovik Air Station was located approximately 50 miles Southeast of the Hopedale station and was equipped with a FPS-14A search radar system. Manned by the 923rd Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron, the remote station was linked to its parent station by means of a troposcatter telecommunications link as part of the "Pole Vault" tropo communication network in the Ballistic Missile Early Warning System.

Accessible primarily by helicopter out of Hopedale or Goose Air Force Base, the site remained operational through June 1961, when the Gap Filler system became obsolete. Closed and largely abandoned thereafter, the site saw its infrastructure razed and removed in the early 1970's.
