5-story residential building originally completed in 1844 as a 3-story townhouse for John Thompson. In the early 1900s, a fourth floor was added to the 3-bay red brick facade. The basement level is clad in rusticated brownstone. The stoop leads to a recessed doorway with a hanging lantern, and has a wrought-iron railing. The facade is capped by a black metal bracketed roof cornice. It was converted to a condominium in 2004 with a penthouse level on top.

  • No. The "penthouse level" was there when I lived there from 1972 to 2000.
  • I also found the original plans of the building which show that the section south of the elevator was built later than the front, probably as the building was converted from a townhouse to an apartment building. The building was reputed to be a stop on the underground railroad. One of the rear rooms in the basement had an old thick steel door and a rear exit to what then must have been the garden. The door was removed when my father lowered the basement floor in 1973.
  • I doubt that it was designed as 3 story building. When I lived it, it had 5 floors plus the aforementioned basement. The 5th floor is somewhat different than the other floors in terms of layout and outdoor space. The 3rd and 4th floor were almost identical. It seems extremely unlikely they were built at different times. The 2nd floor had a similar layout except for much higher ceilings. The building underwent several major renovations after my father sold it in 2000 and vacated it in 2002. The stoop was added. The left hand door was closed off and a flower garden was planted. Beneath that area, the plans show that there was once a wine cellar. Some of the fireplaces were removed to make more space. The steam heat was removed in favor of a state of the art electrical heating system. The plumbing, which had long been structured to serve individual apartments was revised to be more appropriate for a single family house. The individual kitchens were removed, some of the bathrooms were moved to different locations.
